Family dinner is a precious time in a young child’s life. To cook together, sit down to eat, laugh, argue, and then clean up, just to do it all over again the next day. This film represents the taxidermic memory of family dinner as there comes a time in everyones life when you are no longer able to sit down together.

My grandmother used to weave blankets with strips cut from our family members old clothing. As you sat, wrapped in its warmth you could recognize fabric from your shirt, or the jeans that ripped beyond repair the year before. Each patchwork creation was unique because the textiles had traveled miles before finally coming together.
The jacket I created is a combination of old and broken clothing that would otherwise have been thrown away. I documented the process in a cinema vérité style short film, entitled “Scraps,” following the repurposing of these textiles how my grandmother used to do. Throughout the process, I also recorded conversations that I had with my brother to use as the audio, our new family stories being woven into the jacket as I worked.

One day in Juarez, Mexico, a woman shoots and kills two bus drivers who were know rapists and yet were never brought to justice. She was never caught and became a symbol of women fighting back against their oppressors. The film follows a detective who ultimately gives up his search for the vigilante when he receives a letter explaining her actions. There are no heads thought the film to represent how she did not act or her self, but rather all the women in the town who were neglected by the justice system. Based on true events.
